Astatotilapia nubilus $14.99
Astotilapia nubilis is a prolific species, often producing broods in numbers of 40 or more. They are native to the waters of 8 different African lakes and their connecting waterways including Lake Victoria and the rivers of the Victorian basin. Males range in color from grey with an iridescent green sheen and salmon-orange fins and tail to nearly black with red fins and tail.
These fish are quite aggressive and particularly males should be kept singly with several females. The females are mouthbrooders and protect fry in their mouths for a couple of weeks before expelling them. Astotilapia are carnivores, and in nature their diet consists mainly of insect larvae and crustaceans. In the home aquarium they may be fed meaty cichlid pellets or flakes with supplemental frozen foods like mosquito larvae once or twice each week.
